The short answer is: BALLOT ACCESS!
The fine folks over at Georgia Politics Unfiltered have a great little snippet of data that shows how incredibly skewed Georgia Politics are. The gist of it is that this year, 2010, we will have 60 unopposed democrats returning to the State House, 62 unopposed republicans accomplishing the same feat as well as 13 democrat senators and 21 republican senators winning by just showing up. 122 career politicians get a free ride in Georgia in 2010.
Frankly, we're steamed over here in LibertyLand because we really, really, really feel that every seat should should be contested every election year. And it really grinds our gears that we can't compete in these safe districts without having to comply with Georgia's 1943 Jim Crow Ballot access laws. The petition burden is too high and is deliberately designed to be that way which explains why it is possible for our republican and democrat brothers and sisters to maintain political plantations here in Georgia.
But there is one long shot that will enable the transition of the Libertarian Party of Georgia from political body to full fledged Political Party with access to ALL state wide races without petitioning. If our candidate for Governor, John Monds, can poll 20% of the vote this fall the stranglehold on ballot access will be broken and there will be no such thing as an unopposed State House Rep or State Senator or US House rep in the 2012 cycle.
The focus for the whole crew of 9 statewide Libertarian candidates is to push as hard as we can to support John Monds historic run for the Governorship. We'll be talking about it at every campaign event, we'll be writing about on this blog and others and we'll FaceBooking our butts off to drive home the message.
Vote for Libertarian John Monds for Governor of Georgia in 2010!
